Planning guide · Sources checked October 14, 2026. This is a measuring method, not a hands-on fit test of any machine. Follow the installation and operating instructions for the exact equipment you buy.
A machine can fit on the counter and still be awkward to use. Measure the equipment’s resting position, then check what moves when you refill water, load beans, attach the portafilter, steam milk and empty the drip tray. The useful footprint is the space needed for your whole routine.
1. Record the available space
Measure usable counter width and depth, then the height to the lowest cabinet, shelf or light fitting above it. Note sockets, backsplash projections, cabinet doors and other appliances. Measure the actual location rather than assuming all kitchen counters have the same clearance.
Make a simple worksheet with three columns: available space, the exact model’s stated dimensions, and additional access needed. Confirm which measurement is width, depth and height; retailers and manufacturers may present them in different orders. If listings disagree, ask the manufacturer to clarify the exact variant before buying.
2. Trace the stationary footprint
Cut paper or cardboard to the stated base footprint and place it where the equipment would sit. Do the same for a separate grinder. This is a planning aid, not proof that the appliance can be operated safely there. The feet, body, handles and connectors may occupy different space; verify all relevant dimensions.
Leave a working area for a cup, scale, portafilter and milk pitcher. An integrated grinder removes one separate chassis, but a compact machine-and-grinder pair can be arranged differently. Compare the actual layouts rather than assuming one arrangement always saves space.
3. Check each moving part
Water tank: Can you open, lift or slide it out in this location? Can you refill it without spilling near electrical equipment?
Bean hopper: Can you remove the lid and pour beans under the cabinet?
Portafilter: Is there space for its insertion and locking motion?
Steam wand: Can you position the pitcher and move the wand as the manual requires?
Drip tray: Can you pull it out and carry it to the sink without tilting it around an obstruction?
Ask for a demonstration or model-specific measurements if access is uncertain. A photograph of the machine under somebody else’s cabinets does not establish that it will work in your kitchen.
4. Plan power, heat and water safely
Check the manual’s surface, clearance and electrical requirements. For example, the US Bambino instruction book calls for a stable, level, dry surface that resists heat and water, away from the counter edge and heat sources. Those instructions take priority over any decorating idea.
Keep power access and cable routing within the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not plan to operate a machine in a closed cabinet or move hot equipment as part of each drink unless its instructions explicitly support that arrangement. This checklist does not replace model-specific safety guidance.
5. Rehearse the routine without equipment
Using the paper outlines, walk through getting beans, filling water, preparing the portafilter, reaching the controls, steaming milk and carrying the tray to the sink. Then imagine a second person using the same space. Mark the point where objects collide or a task requires moving another appliance.
This rehearsal cannot measure real noise, vibration or usability. It can expose a layout problem before you pay for delivery. If the fit depends on repeatedly pulling the machine forward, check weight, cable movement, countertop suitability and manufacturer instructions before proceeding.
A worksheet to take to the retailer
Available width: ____
Available depth: ____
Height to obstruction: ____
Exact model and region: ____
Confirmed width × depth × height: ____
Tank and hopper access: ____
Wand and portafilter working area: ____
Tray removal route: ____
Manual-required clearances: ____
Power and cable route: ____
Leave an unknown item unanswered until the seller or manufacturer confirms it. “Compact” is a description, not a measurement. Keep the return conditions in mind if a crucial fit detail cannot be established before purchase.
Choose the setup after checking the layout
