The budget comparison / Research-based
Manual milk or an automatic wand? Start with the routine you want—then check the price you can actually buy.
The quick decision
Choose the routine.
Then compare the deal.
Consider the Bambino
You want to practice manual milk steaming, and its verified checkout price leaves room for your grinder.
Consider the Dedica Maestro Plus
You value automatic milk texturing and selectable brew temperatures. A promotion may change which machine costs less.

The budget boundary: machine price versus your whole station
Our budget category means a machine listed below $500, not a complete setup below $500. Neither machine includes a grinder. Start by deciding whether you will buy freshly ground coffee or grind at home, then reserve money for the grinder, a scale, beans and appropriate cleaning supplies. Spending the whole allowance on the machine can leave you without the tools you expected to use.
These are portafilter machines: you prepare the coffee, lock in the portafilter, start the shot and empty the basket. An automatic steam wand does not turn the Dedica into a bean-to-cup appliance. If your goal is a single button from beans to milk drink, pause here and research fully automatic machines instead.
Price snapshot and the deal that changes the comparison
Breville’s US Bambino BES450 page lists $299.95. De’Longhi’s US EC950M page displayed a $249.95 promotional price against $499.95 original pricing when checked; Seattle Coffee Gear’s EC950M listing showed $499.95. These are different seller observations, not a guaranteed price match or proof every finish is available.
At $499.95, the Dedica costs $200 more than the $299.95 Bambino. At the observed $249.95 manufacturer promotion, it costs $50 less. That is why we do not declare the Bambino the automatic value winner. Verify the offer in your own US checkout before building a budget around it. We have not completed a purchase or shipping-availability test.
Breville Bambino: the case for manual milk preparation
Breville documents a 54 mm portafilter, single- and dual-wall filters, a manual steam wand and its ThermoJet heater. The advertised three-second figure describes the heating system reaching extraction temperature; it is not our measured time to a finished drink or a claim that all accessories are fully warmed. The standard Bambino is distinct from the Bambino Plus, which adds automatic milk texturing.
The useful decision is whether you want to learn wand position and milk handling yourself. Manual control can be part of the appeal for someone interested in practicing latte preparation. It is also an extra skill for a household that simply wants the same milk routine each morning. We cannot infer better foam or better espresso from the control layout alone.
Shortlist it if: you want a compact machine and prefer a manual wand, or its verified checkout price leaves more room for a grinder. Skip it if: automatic milk texturing is a priority you expect to use daily.
Dedica Maestro Plus EC950M: what its automation actually covers
De’Longhi documents Auto LatteArt milk texturing with three temperature choices and three texture choices, plus three brew-temperature settings. Its US product description also lists single- and double-wall baskets, a tamper and milk jug. These features address particular preparation steps; you still prepare the portafilter and clean up after brewing.
Temperature selection may appeal to someone who wants an accessible adjustment when changing coffee. That does not establish temperature accuracy in the cup or superiority to the Bambino. Likewise, selectable milk textures are controls rather than proof that every milk alternative behaves identically. Read the manual’s fill limits and cleaning routine before relying on the automatic wand.
Shortlist it if: assisted milk preparation is worth paying for, especially if the manufacturer promotion is available. Skip it if: you want an included grinder or assume the wand removes the need for immediate cleaning. This comparison covers the Maestro Plus EC950M, not every machine carrying the Dedica name.
Build two baskets before choosing
Use the same grinder allowance for both candidates so that the comparison stays fair. With a purely illustrative $200 grinder allowance, machine-plus-grinder totals would be $499.95 for Bambino, $699.95 for Dedica at the retailer listing, or $449.95 for Dedica at the observed manufacturer promotion. That allowance is not a recommendation for an unnamed grinder. Add tax, delivery and anything missing from the exact package.
Compare the included accessories before buying replacements. Portafilter diameter is not a blanket compatibility guarantee: basket shape, locking tabs and dimensions matter. Retailer materials for EC950M contain conflicting accessory-diameter descriptions, so we are deliberately not using those numbers to recommend a replacement basket or tamper. Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer for your precise model.
Space, cleanup and the decision to make first
A compact case still needs room to remove the reservoir, swing the wand, place a milk jug and operate the grinder. Check cabinet clearance with the tank being lifted, not just the machine standing still. Make sure your scale and intended cup fit together under the spouts. Our linked space checklist gives you a way to record those working dimensions.
Choose your milk routine first, compare actual checkout prices second, and settle accessory compatibility third. Neither a larger pump-pressure number nor the longer feature list establishes a better drink. Both options require practice, suitable coffee and routine maintenance. We would keep both on a beginner shortlist rather than award an untested taste winner.
How we reached these conclusions
Specifications and listed prices come from the linked manufacturer and retailer pages. Our recommendations interpret those documented features for particular routines; they are not measured results. We have not established comparative flavor, noise, reliability, steaming speed or repair costs. Prices are dated observations in USD, before tax and delivery. Promotions and availability vary by seller, finish and region. Confirm the exact US model, seller, return terms and checkout total before buying.
