Choose a separate grinder if replacing or upgrading it independently matters to you. Consider an integrated grinder if you prefer one equipment chassis and the specific machine’s controls suit your routine. Compare actual models and complete costs before deciding; the arrangement alone does not determine cup quality.
Price and availability check: On October 20, 2026, the linked US manufacturer pages listed Bambino at $299.95, Encore ESP at $199.95 and Barista Express at $699.95, with add-to-cart controls. These are dated listing observations, not a verified bundle or a guarantee that your preferred variant can ship. Confirm the selected model and final checkout total before ordering.
The practical differences
Separate grinder: two pieces of equipment, independently positioned and purchased. You can keep the grinder if you replace the machine, or the machine if you replace the grinder, subject to the next setup’s compatibility. You need space and power access for both, plus room to transfer grounds or position a portafilter.
Integrated grinder: the grinder and brewer share a chassis. This may simplify your counter arrangement, but it does not prove that the complete setup is narrower than every separate pairing. If one subsystem needs service, check whether the whole appliance must go in and what functions remain usable. Do not assume either arrangement is inherently more reliable.
Compare the complete price, not the number of boxes
As a worked US example, the Bambino at $299.95 plus an Encore ESP at $199.95 totals $499.90. The Barista Express, with an integrated grinder, is listed at $699.95. These manufacturer prices were checked October 20, 2026; tax, delivery, consumables and missing accessories are additional.
That pair costs $200.05 less at these listed prices. It is not evidence that separate equipment is always cheaper. A different grinder, promotional price or machine changes the calculation. See our complete setup cost guide for the assumptions and extras.
An integrated grinder does not mean one-button espresso
Check the preparation steps for the exact model. Breville documents an integrated grinder, manual tamping and manual milk texturing on the Barista Express. You still have a hands-on preparation routine. Do not confuse this category with a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine merely because both contain grinders.
Write down what you do for a drink: weigh or portion beans, grind, transfer grounds if needed, prepare the portafilter, brew, steam milk, and clean up. Then check which steps the specific machine actually automates. A feature list is not a measured preparation-time result.
Upgrade flexibility is useful only if you need it
A separate grinder makes independent replacement straightforward in purchasing terms. That can matter if you expect your coffee preferences or machine to change. It also means choosing and maintaining two products, checking their service support, and arranging two devices on the counter.
With an integrated machine, ask whether you are comfortable keeping the included grinder for your intended use. Check the manual and manufacturer support before assuming you can bypass it, use an external grinder, or obtain a particular replacement part. Independent equipment is not automatically a cheaper long-term choice.
Five questions to settle your choice
1. Do you expect to change the grinder or brewer independently?
2. Does the full arrangement fit, including refill and working space?
3. Which preparation steps do you want to perform yourself?
4. What does the entire basket cost at today’s checkout?
5. What happens if either component needs service?
If you cannot answer the space question, use our counter-space checklist. If your main goal is fewer preparation steps, first compare semi-automatic and fully automatic workflows rather than shopping by grinder location alone.
What this guide does not establish
We have not tested these examples side by side. We cannot rank their flavor, grind consistency, noise, speed, cleaning effort or durability from this research.
